First scorers in prominent Nigerian stadium and goals with Nigerian connections round the World

1947 December 14. – Estadio Santiago BernabĂ©u, home of Real Madrid. Sabino Barinaga, the Spanish coach that led Nigeria to the Mexico ’68 Olympics scored the first goal at Bernabeu’s inauguration when Real Madrid won 3-1 against OS Balenenses of Portugal.

  • 1960 October 2 – Liberty Sta­dium, Ibadan. Aggrey Fynn (Ghana) scored in 5-1 defeat of Mali
  • 1960 October 11 – Liberty Stadium, Ibadan. Honorio (Portuguese Guinea, now Guinea Bissau) scored in the first flood-lit match in Nigeria in a 2-3 loss to Western Rovers.
  • 1964 August 2 – Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna Tony Ingham (Brit­ish) in 3-0 defeat of Northern Nigeria team by QPR.
  • 1968 December 7 – Ogbe Sta­dium, Benin. Peter Obi (not the former Anambra governor) scored the first goal for Midwest State in a 1-1 draw with Western State.
  • 1972 February 13 – Ahmadu Ahidjo Stadium, YaoundĂ© Cameroon. Josiah Dombraiye of Nigeria opened scoring in 2-1 defeat of Cameroon.
  • 1972 December 4 – National Stadium, Lagos. Yakubu Mambo of Ni­geria opened scoring in the 3-0 defeat of Mali.
  • 1977 April 2 – Calabar Stadium, now UJ Esuene Stadium. Umo Uyo of Calabar Rovers opened scoring in 1-1 draw with Bendel Insurance.
  • 1982 October 2 – Monika Stadi­um. Deprive Tebowei of NEPA opened scoring in a clash with Super Stores.
  • 1986 January 16 – Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu. Sylvanus Nsofor of Rangers opened scoring in 2-0 defeat of City FC of Zambia.
  • 1988 May 28 – Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan. El Kanemi’s Mark Odu became the first scorer after con­verting a 70th minute penalty kick in a 1-0 defeat of IICC Shooting Stars.
  • 2007 June 6 – Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. Enyimba’s Uche Kalu (not Super Eagles’ Kalu Uche) opened scoring in a 2-1 defeat of Wikki Tourists in a Super League contest after the maiden match (Enyimba versus Ghana’s Asante Kotoko) at the sta­dium’s inauguration on May 28 ended goalless..
